common opulence (2015-2017)

Common Opulence is an ad hoc assembly of 30 artists from across Canada. We took formation during the summers of 2015 and 2016 in Demmitt, Alberta for two artist residencies hosted on the land of artist Peter von Tiesenhausen. A temporary land-based community was formed during these residencies, where skill sharing, timber framing and straw bale construction using local and salvaged materials, and community building were central to our projects. As a group, we reflect on and respond to current issues such as austerity within the arts sectors, global industrialization and impending impacts, and the ongoing destruction of the natural environment. This project is ongoing and emergent.
